The Tiny Rock Restaurant in the Sea

At beautiful Michanwi Pingwe Beach on Zanzibar’s coast in Africa is an incredibly unique restaurant. The restaurant is so small, it’s perched on a fossilized bed of coral located in the Indian ocean. Another surprise is that the interior is quite different than the interior. To reach the restaurant, it’s either a walk or boat ride because when the tide comes in, the restaurant is surrounded by water. The spot is so spectacular that it has been used by Vogue magazine for photo shoots.

The restaurant serves a wide variety of seafood as well as wine, beer and soft drinks. However, the Rock Restaurant is a little more pricey than one might expect. The least expensive items on the menu are the mango salad, octopus salad and fish carpaccio — each priced at $14.00 USD. The most expensive menu item is the Rock Special with grilled lobster, cigal, jumbo prawn, fish filet and calamari oil for $48.00 USD. But if you can make it to Zanzibar for a visit, a trip to the restaurant is a must.

Hoping to get this boosted, because maybe it can save someone from hard times and get them a job at whatever establishment this racist ass manager is at.  (this was on NYT FB article posting about a (Black) mother Google searching her unborn child’s name to see what connotations and future it could hold for him)

And then you have people justifying this action. But a meritocracy exists right?

But I don’t even know how to pronounce his last name…..

Someone find out where he works so we can can e-mail his Boss and get him fired cause almost every company has a non discrimination policy

The worst part, I think, is that it’s a common place thing.  He’s just the one with the gall to say it out loud.  But everyone will tell black people that they’re being paranoid or that they need to work harder or try harder or make a better resume because we’re in “post-racial America” and the “only people holding black people back is black people.”  But then in the real world you have women like this and men like this, and you can see how small changes on paper change your perceived value.

photos by gerry ellis from the david sheldrick wildlife trust, a nursery and orphanage for elephants in kenya’s tsavo east national park. here, fifty five keepers are charged with being around the clock parents to an elephant. the elephants, however, are the ones who chose their caretakers; it is the keepers who must ingratiate themselves to the elephants and earn their trust.

when elephants first arrive at the orphanage they are often traumatized from having witnessed the slaughter of their mothers and family by poachers. grieving can last several months, and they often lose the will to live. but as dame daphne sheldrick, founder of the orphanage, explains, a caretaker is charged with “persuading an elephant to live when it wants to die.”

approximately 35,000 elephants are killed by humans every year. with an estimated 350,000 elephants left in the whole continent of africa, they will be gone in the wild within ten years.

cbc’s the nature of things did a program on the elephants and their caretakers. you can foster an elephant with the david sheldrick wildlife trust online here. for more on the emotional lives of elephants, as well as the david sheldrick wildlife trust and other human efforts to save them, check out these posts
